BRUSSELS, 19 September 2019 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today held a workshop on the Global Network of Regional and Sustainable Energy Centres at the UN House in Brussels.

The workshop aimed to begin a dialogue with key representatives of the European Commission (EC), and representatives of African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries ahead of the conference on “Regional Cooperation to Accelerate Sustainable Energy Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries” which will take place on 3 October in Vienna, Austria.

The conference is organized as a concrete follow-up to the EU Council Conclusions on Energy and Development that highlighted the role of regional sustainable energy cooperation. It aims to accelerate global efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and integration to scale up renewable energy and energy efficiency investment, innovation and entrepreneurship in developing countries.

The Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC) is a programme led by UNIDO as an innovative South-South and triangular multi-stakeholder partnership to accelerate the energy and climate transformation in developing countries, with the aim of making technology transfers easier. GN-SEC established a number of regional centres in order to facilitate coordination efforts.

Martin Lugmayr the coordinator of GN-SEC at UNIDO and Rene Karottki from the consulting firm, Grue + Hornstrup A/S, presented the objectives of the upcoming conference and its discussion paper, as well as the evaluation and perspectives of the GN-SEC and existing regional sustainable energy cooperation. This was followed by a discussion with the participants on the regional sustainable energy cooperation programmes and projects in developing countries, and the identification of potential future partners for GN-SEC.

During the workshop Felice Zaccheo, head of the sustainable energy and climate unit at the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) said that “energy is at the core of our cooperation with UNIDO. Sustainable energy and energy efficiency are core objectives of our policy.”

UNIDO’s Lugmayr underlined that “the cooperation through the regional centers can be an important accelerator for the energy and climate transformation.” He also mentioned the importance of empowering local populations in order to make this effort as inclusive as possible: “the voice for the energy revolution has to come from the bottom, from the people.”

Patrick Gilabert, UNIDO Representative to the European Union in Brussels stated: “The workshop was an excellent platform for different specialists working on energy in Brussels to discuss on how to cooperate on this important issue in developing countries.”
